Meet The Team

We are a full-service home-building crew with widely ranging skills and backgrounds, tailored to meet the complex needs of our clients and their homes; hopefully also having a little fun along the way.

Modern Heritage builders excel at the art of fine home building in New England, where new and old, antique and contemporary, and high-tech and old school intersect across structures, projects, and goals. Andrew Brewin, Ian Mentasti, and Steve Slade founded Modern Heritage in 2015, with decades of fine home building and design partnership experience between them. The firm was founded on the notion that the client experience could be elevated through the balance of a strong commitment to craftsmanship and efficient, forward-thinking processes and technology. Our in-house staff is composed of highly skilled project managers, carpenters, fine woodworkers, drafters, and design support specialists. Together with our best-in-trade partners across the industry, we deliver creative, comfortable, valuable solutions to every project.

In addition to our ability to work on all styles and scopes of residential construction, framing through fine finishes, we are also working every day to build trust and lasting relationships with our clients. Modern Heritage was created to bring back the art that skilled builders brought to the great homes and estates of New England’s past while operating as a forward-thinking, tech-savvy, 21st-century firm.

Leadership

Ian Mentasti

Co-Founder and Director of Design Development

Ian has extensive experience in blending the creative with the technical, a cornerstone of working with New England’s wide ranging architectural styles. For over 25 years he has relied on his extensive background in spatial planning from the Boston Architectural College —specializing in millwork and detailing—to offer design services and build project management for homeowners, architects, and designers. Ian’s award-winning work has been recognized in major design publications including Architectural Digest, New England Home, Design New England and more. Raised in Vermont and now bringing up his own family on the North Shore of Boston, Ian has a deep love for the rich natural and cultural heritage of New England living.

Andrew Brewin

Co-Founder and Director of Operations

Andrew’s background in music set the foundation for his understanding of how small details come together. While at the Berklee College of Music, Andrew spent summers working with a custom home builder in Marblehead and built boats on the side. During this time he developed his love for detailed craftsmanship and understanding of fine carpentry. After many successful years running his own cabinetry and millwork shop in California, Andrew returned home to New England with finely tuned carpentry skills and west-coast perspectives on the trade. Andrew spends much of his free time on the water, repairing his lobster boat or in the kitchen, cooking for family and friends who enjoy his skill with a saucepan.

Steven Slade

Co-Founder and Director of Construction

Construction has always been a way of life for Steve; he started by mixing mortar for his father’s masonry business. The breadth of Steve’s 30 years of experience spans from building custom cabinets to supervising the remodel of a historic mansion for The Classic Group. As co-founder of Modern Heritage, Steve’s expertise in construction and carpentry pairs well with his hands-on, personable approach. When he is not coordinating with tradesmen, reviewing schedules with clients, or managing field crews, you will find Steve coping an intricate crown molding or fine tuning a new install. Steve’s love for the craft and dedication to his clients reflect the core principles of the MH team.

Jamie Tello

Lead Carpenter

Jamie has been with Modern Heritage since 2016 and embodies the spirit of the firm, delivering old school quality craftsmanship with good communication and forward thinking project management. From tile work through all levels of carpentry, Jamie has worked his way through the residential build trades to end up with a holistic understanding of the design-build process. Originally from the South Shore of Boston, Jamie is well versed in classic coastal New England architecture, spending a large portion of youth sailing, surfing and otherwise enjoying seaside life on Cape Cod. Now a father of two and fixing up his own home in Weymouth, Jamie brings a personable and friendly approach to working with clients and partners alike.
